It's a deeply sad day for us in the blues world. We lost two of our national treasures, with the passing this morning of Etta James (73) and Johnny Otis (90). Johnny passed yesterday, one day ahead of Etta, whom he discovered as a young woman, singing on the street with her girlfriends. Their departure from our world here, into the next, will bring to the minds of everyone, how much these two music icons influenced the music industry. Their contribution to the music world is and will remain legendary.
Otis helped steer a list of performers to stardom, the least of whom was, Etta James. They included Esther Phillips, Jackie Wilson, Big Mama Thornton - whose hit recording of "Hound Dog," made in 1952 four years before Elvis Presley's, was produced by Mr. Otis and featured him on drums.
